The nation’s economy grew at a robust 6.5 percent annual rate in the first quarter of 1981, the biggest jump in nearly three years. Vice President George Bush sought public support for President Reagan's budget and tax cutting plan Monday in Raleigh, telling North Carolina business and Republican leaders that Congress should enact the fundamental economic package now and "fine tune it later.” The body of an unidentified black person was found Monday on the banks of the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta. The Spartanburg County Foundation has awarded its six annual four year scholarships to three young men and three young women high school seniors on the basis of academic excellence. One of the recipients was Jeffrey Ervin Bradey, Landrum High School, son of William E. Bradey of 105 E. Crest Ave., Landrum. The U. S. Navy announced Monday that it accepts liability for the collision between the U. S. missle firing submarine George (Continued On Back Pagel Gets Fellowship Miss Patricia Payne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Payne of Tryon has been awarded an Academic Fellowship to the University of Kentucky for graduate study in economics. This award is based on the recommendation of the Department of Economics and on the recipient’s academic potential. Patricia will receive her Bachelors Degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in May. She plans to concentrate her graduate studies in the areas of International Economics and Investment Banking. Green Creek Watch The Green Creek Area Community Watch residents are invited to attend a meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Green Creek Community Building The third order of Community Watch Signs can be picked up at this time. Lanning-Robinson Mrs. Minnie Lanning of Landrum, S. C. has announced the engagement of her daughter, Patsy Denise, to Thomas Andrew Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Robinson, Jr. of Greenville, S. C. Miss Lanning is employed by Globe Oil Co. of Greenville and Mr. Robinson works for Basic Systems, Inc., also of Greenville. An August wedding is planned at the Columbus Baptist Church. Two Selected For Boys State Howard B. Greene, Commander of American Legion Post No. 250 in Tryon, announced today the selection of the delegates for the 1981 session of The American Legion, Department of North Carolina's Annual Tar Heel Boys' State. Selected for the six-day intensive workshop in state government and politics were Randy Buckner, Tryon High School, son of Mrs. Tegwen Buckner and Bruce Owens, Polk Central High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Owens of Columbus. Boys’ State Delegates participate in a variety of activities which are designed to improve their awareness and understanding of (a) the organization and operations of government and politics in North Carolina and (b) major areas of state public policies which are being debated currently in North Carolina. The objective of Boys' State is to improve citizenship for future and present generations of Tar Heels. Candidates for Boys' State are carefully screened for those boys with outstanding qualities, including leadership, character, scholarship and service. Young men who are members of the rising senior class are the candidates considered for attendance at Tar Heel Boys’ State. The 1981 session of American Continued On Back Page doggers To Dance Friday At 7 p.m. The Polk County doggers, under the direction of Mrs Ray Brown, will appear at the 4-H Center in Columbus on Friday, April 24th at 7 p.m. There is also an International Tea and Exhibit sponsored by the Polk County Extension Homemakers. The tea is from 3 to5 p.m. and the exhibit from 3 to 8 p.m. The 4-H Barbecue Chicken Supper is in the other building from 5 to8p m Should you wish to exhibit some of your unusual international articles call Jackie Henson, at 894-8212. Tonight Investiture service for the local Pathfinder Club will be held tonight (Wednesday) at 7:00 o'clock in the Tryon Seventh-day Adventist Church. Merle Rouse, Junior Youth Leader for the Carolina Conference of Adventists, will present awards to the young people for their achievements in specific areas of study and work during the past year.
